Lawn Renovations with Weed Man

Weed Man Technician

When faced with the prospect of reclaiming a neglected or ravaged lawn, examine the grass carefully. If coarse grasses and weeds or mosses dominate, lawn renovation may not be possible. In this case, you must replace the old lawn and make a new one. Your local Weed Man can advise you and put you in touch with a reputable landscape firm in your area.

If, however, there is a predominance of finer grasses interspersed with areas of coarser grasses and weeds, renovation can be carried out.

Renovations projects should be done either early in the spring or late summer for best results, simply follow these steps:

1.    Lower the mowing height to 2 inches.

2.    Rake thin or bare areas with a garden rake to remove dead material and debris.

3.    Spread high-quality grass seed suitable for your region at a rate of 4 to 6 pounds per 1000 ft2 with either a broadcast or drop spreader. (1.8 to 2.8 kg per 100 m2)

4.    Spread approximately ½“ of screened topsoil over the entire seeded area. If there isn’t already a base of soil, lay down about 1” of soil prior to seeding.

5.    Apply a starter fertilizer that contains a high amount of phosphorous which helps promote root growth and strengthen the overall health of the grass plants.

6.    Gently tamp down the soil with a flat-bottomed tool, such as a hoe or rake, to gently press down on the soil to remove air pockets and create seed-to-soil contact.

7.    Areas should be watered as the soil should be kept moist for 3-4 weeks. You may see germination within 5-7 days but should see significant improvement in 2-3 weeks.

Some weed control products can damage young grass seedlings so make sure you advise your Weed Man of your renovation practices.
